Advantages of Renting Textbooks versus Buying

Why should students rent textbooks? Full time students may pay $400, $500 or $600 a semester for the textbooks they need. With the option of renting textbooks versus buying the same books and spending around $150 or less, the choice is clear. Many rental book stores also use codes that allow a percentage off the price making them even less.

When considering the amount of money that can be saved it makes perfect sense to rent textbooks rather than purchasing them new or used. The fact is textbooks are necessary and you must have them to further your education, but with a choice of renting textbooks versus buying you will not have to spend a lot of money that you cannot recoup.

Textbooks do not retain value and selling them after you have finished the class will not bring you anywhere near the price you paid for them. Typically a used textbook will bring about 20% of the new price and for many this is not an option.

Many students are working to put themselves through college and when it is possible to save money, this is of the utmost importance. This is why the idea of renting textbooks versus buying has become so popular. If your parents are paying for your college education, they are interested in saving money as well. The cost of purchasing textbooks for a family that is putting 2 or 3 students through college can easily add up to thousands of dollars.

When choosing to rent textbooks, there are various places online this can be done. It is easy to find them and compare the prices to see which online bookstore has the cheapest price. In addition, they guarantee the quality of the books, so you do not have to worry about missing pages or books that have notes taken in them that obscures the printing.

The rental service allows students to save at the least 50% off the purchase price and sometimes the savings can be as high as 75%. College campuses offering the option to rent textbooks have seen a major increase in just the last two or three years. More are expected to offer this option as students turn to renting textbooks versus buying them.
