What are the Textbook Rental Advantages and Disadvantages?
What do you think is the reason most students prefer textbook renting to buying a textbook? The number one reason is the price. The price of five books for a semester can be $400, $500 and even as much as $800, depending upon the books needed. The cost of college, just like everything else keeps going up. There are textbook rental advantages and disadvantages but the advantages seem to outweigh the disadvantages.
First of all let’s look at the advantages other than the price which was mentioned. Textbook renting can allow you to return a book if you decide to drop a class. If you have purchased the book, you may just be stuck with it. By this time all the other students that are taking the class have already purchased or rented their books so no one will be looking for the one you have.
Textbook renting is easy. You can rent online or you can go into the bookstore if they have one on campus. The search for the textbooks you need is simple. Some bookstores have access to the instructor’s booklist so they can make sure and order the books students will need.
There is, of course the advantage of paying for the rentals with a credit or debit card or cash. However here is where we get into the textbook rental advantages and disadvantages. One of the disadvantage, although not major is the requirement of a credit card even if you pay cash for renting the textbook. Textbook renting would be much more expensive if the bookstore had no way of getting their money for the book if something happened to it.
If you do not have a credit card, you may have to get your parents to vouch for your return of the book in good shape and use their credit card. This will not be a problem if you take care of the book and return it when you are supposed to.
Some of the textbook renting venues have expanded their inventory and have over 500,000 books. This allows students a good chance that the books they need will be in stock. So, as you can see when it comes to textbook rental advantages and disadvantages, the advantages have taken the lead.
